Famously known for playing Mel Gibson's youngest daughter in the 2000 Revolutionary War movie 'The Patriot,' actress Skye McCole Bartusiak died at her home in Houston on July 19, Saturday. She was 21.
'We lost our girl,' the actress's mother Helen McCole Bartusiak told CNN. 'She was a kind and really beautiful girl.'
The investigators have yet to determine the cause of death. However, the mother said, 'We think she had a seizure and choked and nobody was there.'
Bartusiak had been suffering from epileptic seizures, which she suffered since she was a baby but disappeared for a few years until recently. She was found by her boyfriend unresponsive while sitting up in her bed in the garage apartment adjacent to her parents' house.
Before paramedics arrived, the mother said started cardiopulmonary resuscitation on her daughter.
'They were working on her for 45 minutes and could not get a heartbeat. I've done CPR on that kid more than one time and it just didn't work this time,' the mother said.
At the age of 6, Bartusiak started her movie acting career with a role in 'The Cider House Rules' in 1999. After two years, she starred in 'Don't Say a Word' as the daughter of Michael Douglas' character.
The last time she appeared in a movie was in 2012 with a lead role in the low-budget thriller 'Sick Boy.'
In recent months, according to her mother, Bartusiak had been preparing to produce and direct her first feature movie after producing and starring in several short films, Variety has learned.
'The girl has lived such an amazing life,' said the mother who will include Bartusiak's snaps with actors Gibson, Douglas, and Dennis Hopper and Presidents George W. and George H.W. Bush in the photos of her actress daughter for the funeral.
She made her debut on the small screen in the television miniseries 'Storm of the Century' in 1999, which was followed by a role on '24' from 2002 to 2003. She also appeared in 'Lost' and 'House M.D.,' according to Associated Press.
In 2008, another Bartusiak's 'The Patriot' co-actor Heath Ledger died after an accidental overdose of painkillers and sedatives.
