A new Reuters poll shows Democrat Beto O’Rourke 2 points ahead of Tea Party Republican Ted Cruz in the hotly-contested Texas Senate race. (Within the margin of error.)
This is the first time O’Rourke has polled ahead of Cruz.
Just last week, word leaked that the Trump White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney told GOP donors that Cruz might lose because he’s not “likable” enough. (Cruz’s approval rating stands at 29%, with disapproval at 58%).
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also indicated concern about Cruz’s race.
Here’s the new Reuters poll:
Beto’s numbers have been getting better for months, while Cruz’s have been dropping (other than one recent poll). Clearly 10% to 15% of the electorate is undecided. But they’re slowly moving Beto’s way. And Beto has six weeks left to seal the deal.
It shouldn’t be this way. Trump won Texas by 9 points. And Texas has been notoriously hard for Democrats to win statewide office. So the fact that O’Rourke is polling close to Cruz, let alone ahead, is already news, and yet another sign of voter discontent and a building Democratic wave in November.
We’ve been told for months that the Democrats had zero chance of taking back the Senate. I’d been arguing that wave elections do strange things, and many times the impossible becomes possible in the final months of the campaign. And in fact, a growing number of pundits are now saying there’s an outside chance the Democrats could take the Senate in addition to the House. It’s still a long-shot, as Dems are on the defensive in most of the races — some are saying there’s a 1 in 3 chance — but it’s on the map now, and wasn’t before.
You never know what’s going to change the electoral math. A week ago, we had no idea we’d be having a MeToo moment with Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination, but here we are. How Republicans handle that controversy could further erode their chances at holding the Congress.
And that’s why we need to support Democratic candidates now. The election is November 6. That’s a little over six weeks away. If you haven’t already — heck, even if you have — please chip in and support Beto’s race.
And if you have the chance, support other Dems too! We don’t ever have to go through another Kavanaugh. We just have to take back the Senate.
