In a bizarre, and troubling, video just published by Media Matters News Director John Whitehouse, far-right Republican icon Candace Owens explains her views on Hitler and nationalism, and they’re a doozie.
Owens, who is the communications director of the Tea Party group Turning Point USA, while standing next to another far-right GOP icon, Charlie Kirk, explains that if Hitler had only kept his policies to Germany itself, he’d have been “fine.” Hitler’s crime was going “global,” Owens explains.
I actually don’t have any problems at all with the word nationalism. I think that it gets, the definition gets poisoned by elitists that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I don’t want. When you think about, whenever we say nationalism, the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler. He was a national socialist. But if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, okay fine. The problem is that he had dreams outside of Germany. He wanted to globalize, he wanted everybody to be German, everybody to be speaking German, everybody to look a different way. That’s not, to me that’s not nationalism.
– Candace Owens at the RAC Club London on 11th December 2018.
In fact, “the problem” was that Hitler was a genocidal maniac who also committed crimes domestically against his own people. He killed a lot of Jews (and others) in Germany, as well as taking away their property, restricting their domestic movement, giving them less food than “good Germans,” fomenting hate crimes, forcing them to wear Stars of David, deporting them, and more.
The Holocaust Museum in DC reports that, “in all, the Germans and their collaborators killed between 160,000 and 180,000 German Jews in the Holocaust, including most of those Jews deported out of Germany.”
So, no, Hitler’s domestic policies were not “okay” or “fine,” and his only mistake was not moving his killing machines outside of the German border.
You’ll note that Charlie Kirk didn’t jump in to correct her.
These are today’s Republican thought leaders embraced at the highest rungs of the Republican party, including the Trump family and White House. Kirk is a close friend of Donald Trump Jr., and both he and Owens reportedly met privately with Trump in the Oval Office.
We await the White House’s denunciation of Owens.
