An ex-trooper in South Carolina has been booked on assault and battery charges over the shooting of an unarmed man, authorities said.
Sean Groubert, 31, was booked Wednesday at the Richland County Detention Center, WLTX-TV reported.
Witness statements, along with audio and video tapes, show the shooting was not justified, authorities said.
Groubert was fired on Sept. 19 by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety after the agency received a state report containing the witness and electronic device information.
The trooper did not follow protocol when he shot Levar Jones, 35, at a convenience store during a traffic stop on Sept. 4.

Jones was asked to get out of his vehicle, and complied, authorities said. When Jones reached back into the vehicle to get his license, Groubert began yelling, 'Get out of the car,' and shot Jones.
The driver suffered a hip injury and is recovering.
Groubert faces a charge of assault and battery with a high and aggravated nature.
