The Washington Post is reporting that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin established a secret back-channel line of communication during the transition in early January.
Trump and Putin allegedly used the founder of Blackwater (who has ties to Steve Bannon, and is the brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos) and a Russian close to Putin as the go-betweens. The two reportedly met in the Seychelles, off of east Africa.
According to the Post, no one bothered notifying the Obama administration.
So, yet again we have more unreported, secret contacts between Team Trump and the highest levels of the Russian government. And while Sean Spicer and a spokesman for DeVos’ brother are calling the Post story inaccurate, it’s incredibly detailed and sourced by US, European and Arab officials.

And keep in mind that Trump and company repeatedly denied any contacts with the Russians. Now we know that Jeff Sessions, Gen. Flynn, Carter Page, Jared Kushner, JD Gordon and Donald Trump all had contacts with the Russians in the past year before Trump’s swearing-in. So you decide whether you Trump’s denial of yet another secret communication with the Russians is credible or not.
So what does this mean? First of all, that the Russia story only continues to grow. Why all the secrecy? Whether it’s sneaking the Russian ambassador into Trump Tower in December, denying every single meeting or communication that Trump and staff had with the Russians, or going halfway across the world to secretly meet the Russians, via surrogates, only to deny it once it was discovered by the Washington Post — why all the subterfuge?
And with this particular story, now that it’s public, why not just admit it? And even if this particular story isn’t true — though, read the Post story, it’s quite detailed — what about all the other contacts and all the other lies? What were Trump and his associates doing with the Russians that they so felt the need to hide all of these contacts and lie about them?
This many people simply do not lie this much when they haven’t done anything wrong.
