A United Airlines flight that took off from O'Hare International Airport and was bound for southern California with 101 people on board was diverted to Wichita, Kan., on Sunday night after an emergency evacuation chute inflated inside the aircraft in midair, the airline said.
United flight 1463, which was carrying 96 passengers with five crew members on board, was headed to Orange County's John Wayne Airport, south of Los Angeles, when the emergency chute accidentally deployed, the airline said.
'The flight diverted to Wichita ... No one was injured, and the flight landed safely,' said Christen David, an airline spokesman, in an email. The Boeing 737-700 took off from O'Hare around 8:36 p.m. CDT, according to United.
'Scariest flight of all time,' passenger Taylor Martinez posted on Twitter.
United said all passengers were seated at the time of the incident and added that earlier reports that a passenger had attempted to open the door in flight were false.
It said a maintenance team would inspect the aircraft to determine what happened.
The plane landed at MidContinent Airport in Wichita, David said.
'We are flying in another aircraft to resume the flight and get our customers to their final destination as quickly as possible tomorrow morning,'he said.
