Filner's lawyer, the well-respected Harvey Berger, said in a letter Wednesday that the city of San Diego may be liable for damages in a sexual harassment lawsuit because Filner never received his required behavioral training within his first six months on the job.
The letter, first reported by Voice of San Diego Wednesday, was made public a day after the San Diego City Council voted unanimously not to pay Filner's bills and, separately and also unanimously, to sue him to indemnify the city against damages and fees it may face as a result of a sexual harassment lawsuit brought against the mayor and the city by his former communications director.
Here are the comments from seven local news sites, including this one.
U-T San Diego: Filner's lawyer shifts blame to city
Tim Liao: Are we talking about a grown-up here?
Thomas Tenhunen: Sorry but this is too funny. Also, Ignorantia juris non excusat. Nuff said.
Rob Bowman: Still blaming the victim? You either have no class and empathy or you're a lawyer. But I repeat myself.
Claudia Haines: And who may I ask is over the mayor to make sure he followed through on that? Not city council, not the city attorney, not the citizens of san diego, I will bet the buck stopped at the office of the mayor.
Ken Platt: So did McCormack receive this training? If she had, then the training would have instructed her to report harassment when it first happened 6 months ago. If she has not recieved the training, then she doesn't have a leg to stand on in her suit either.
KFMB: Filner attorney: City liable for failing to provide sexual harassment training
Rich: You want us to believe this is the city's fault? For not potty training Bob before letting him loose on the city carpet? Pardon me while I lay down and laugh with the rest of the jury.
JonesyPhD: LOL..."you failed to inform my client that playing grabass was frowned upon...so you're responsible" CLASSIC!!!
Ash Lee: He's got a lot a nerve.
Dupe: You cant tell me he never had it at any job, if not lets sum up the golden rule "keep your mud hooks off other people"
Shannon: Wow, just wow...
KGTV: Bob Filner's attorney says San Diego is at fault for mayor's behavior
CarolynBrady: Legal isn't always logical.
