Cops investigate a police-involved shooting in the Bronx.
A police officer shot and killed a gunman early Sunday after the man opened fire on a Bronx street corner and turned the gun on the responding officers, cops said.
Two officers on foot patrol in the Melrose neighborhood heard gunfire shortly before 3 a.m., cops said.
They ran to the corner of Courtlandt Ave. and East 151st St., less than a block away, and ordered the man to drop the gun he was brandishing, sources said.
Instead, the man, who police have not yet identified, turned toward them and fired. One officer returned a single round, killing the shooter with one shot to the head, police said. Neither officer was injured.
"They literally were half a block away from where the shots were being fired. They ran to the corner and there it was," a police source said.
Police recovered a 9mm handgun from the scene.
So far, no civilians have come forward with injuries and it is unclear if the man was firing at a specific target.
Both officers were taken to Jacobi Medical Center and treated for trauma, cops said.
