We have a winner.
Hillary Clinton absolutely, deliciously and definitively destroyed Donald Trump in tonight’s presidential debate.
The debate started slow. Throughout the first half hour, it felt like a typical old, boring presidential debate. Hillary looked good, great in fact. Trump looked as though he chose to forgo any make-up (he looked corpse-y). But, to his credit, Trump was calm, collected, and decidedly not crazy.
Then things changed.
Hillary managed to poke Trump a few times. I don’t even recall what the first poke was, perhaps it was berating Trump for his support of Putin. And trump lost it. LOST IT. It was like watching Alec Baldwin on Saturday Night Live. Trump would interrupt Hillary, mid-sentence, with a single word: “wrong.”
But the worst, most appalling part of the debate was when Trump refused to say whether he’d accept the results of the election. Hillary ripped Trump for it, as did every other observer besides Trump’s paid shills. The Trump surrogates and staff even tried to compare Trump’s near-call for a revolution to the contested election of 2000. As if Al Gore contested the election. He didn’t. As CNN’s Gloria Borger pointed out, Gore was ready to concede when the Florida Secretary of State called him and told Gore that there was going to be an automatic recount, and thus the election wasn’t over.
Another telling moment was when Trump called Hillary “a nasty woman.” It was gratuitous, nasty, and venomous. It was a moment of pure honesty — the real Donald Trump showed through in spades. Here is that moment:
Bottom line: Hillary killed it. Trump needed a big win tonight — a huge win. And Hillary destroyed him. He was exposed as an intellectual and emotional lightweight who isn’t fit to serve as president. Hillary, on the other hand, came across smart, cool, collected and presidential. There is no question who is prepared to lead our country.
My friend Alan Klein and I sat down immediately after debate and talked it through. You can watch that discussion here:
