Donald Trump gave a rare “apology” today after a recording surfaced showing him having a lewd conversation about women with a reporter back in 2005.
The story was broken by the Washington Post’s David Fahrenthold.
Trump issued a statement today saying: “I apologize if anyone was offended.”
Trump’s “apology” went on to criticize Bill Clinton, who is not in this race: “Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course – not even close.”
A political analyst on CNN noted that she found Trump’s comments “predatory” on women, and she added that his apology was not a real apology. You don’t criticize someone else in your apology, she added. I’d also add that an apology isn’t an apology when you say “I’m sorry if you were offended.” The point is to acknowledge that YOU understand that what you said was offensive.
The video, recorded several months after Trump married his third wife, Melania, shows Trump talking to Billy Bush of “Access Hollywood,” who is now on the “Today Show.” They are discussing Trump’s many sexual conquests.
Here’s the video:
More from the Post:
“I did try and f— her. She was married,” Trump says.
Trump continues: “And I moved on her very heavily. In fact, I took her out furniture shopping. She wanted to get some furniture. I said, ‘I’ll show you where they have some nice furniture.’”
“I moved on her like a bitch, but I couldn’t get there. And she was married,” Trump says. “Then all of a sudden I see her, she’s now got the big phony tits and everything. She’s totally changed her look.”
There’s more:
“I’ve gotta use some tic tacs, just in case I start kissing her,” Trump says.“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait.”
“And when you’re a star they let you do it,” Trump says. “You can do anything.”
“Whatever you want,” says another voice, apparently Bush’s.
“Grab them by the p—y,” Trump says. “You can do anything.”
You can do anything. If you’d like to be on the receiving end of a sexual harassment, and assault, complaint. And Briana Keilor just noted this on CNN. He seems to be condoning forcibly advances towards women. Grabbing them by their private parts. It’s sick.
The fact that Trump immediately issued what is being called an apology — and Trump never apologizes — shows that campaign manager Kellyanne Conway likely intervened and told Trump that he had no choice but to step back the comments. Still, Trump being Trump, he couldn’t help but take a stab at Clinton, which Trump thinks somehow exonerates what he did, and you’ll also note that Trump’s apology is a bit of a non-apology. Trump said “I apologize if anyone was offended.” Trump didn’t acknowledge that was he said WAS offensive.
And finally, we have, yet again, questions surrounding Trump’s temperament. As Jake Tapper on CNN just noted, who talks like that? It’s shows an attitude towards towards women that is demeaning and degrading, and it shows all too well what Trump thinks of himself. He’s a “star,” he can do anything. You really need to watch the entire video, and see how Trump and Billy Bush suddenly turn on the charm when they meet the woman they were just having the lewd conversation about. Suddenly, Trump and Bush are all polite and charmed. It’s creepy as hell.
And then for Trump to criticize Bill Clinton, as if Clinton is relevant to this, and as if Bill Clinton didn’t already pay a price for his behavior: Clinton was impeached and publicly humiliated for what he did.
Is that what Trump is suggesting we do to him?
