Donald Trump revealed today that he is aware of terrorist attacks, happening around the world, that the media (he says) refuses to report on.
Trump revealed his latest conspiracy theory during an address U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida.
Trump first mentioned the recent attacks in France, then went off on his rather odd tangent:
“You’ve seen what happened in Paris and Nice, all over Europe it’s happening. It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported. And in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons, and you understand that.”
Yes, the president of the United States is now peddling conspiracy theories about mysterious terrorist attacks that only he and the media know about, but the media won’t tell you.
This is reminiscent of senior Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway’s repeated claim that a fictitious terrorist “massacre” occurred in Bowling Green, Kentucky. No such attack has ever occurred. But that hasn’t stopped Conway from mentioning it on three different occasions.
CNN’s Jake Tapper has an other possible explanation today. Trump could be reading all the fake news online, including the fictitious claims of his own top staff, and when doesn’t see those fake stories reported on in the mainstream press, he just assumes the press is censoring the news. When in fact, the stories aren’t real.
Of course, Trump’s claims are false. The media would jump at the chance to report on a terrorist attack, as it’s big news. And big news equals big traffic and big money. Trump’s claim that we all know why the media would conspire not to report on the attacks is thus equally bizarre.
Of course, Trump offered no further explanation. Though his spokesman, Sean Spicer, later tried to claim that the media didn’t get enough attention to certain terrorist attacks. First off, as Jake Tapper noted, that isn’t what Trump said. Second, name one?
The question remains whether Trump is simply a liar, or delusional.
