President Obama finally goes there in a speech today, telling the audience that Donald Trump is unfit to be president.
Obama’s point, which I’ve mentioned as well before, is that it doesn’t matter if Trump is (or claims to be) a Republican. The problem isn’t that Trump is a Republican, it’s his temperament. It’s his preparedness for the job.
This is a point I’d made before about GW Bush. I never felt he was qualified to be president. Cheney, on the other hand, was. Bush just wasn’t, in my view. Now that doesn’t mean I’d agree with much of anything Cheney would do, but I never questioned whether he could handle the job — Cheney could handle the job. Hillary can handle the job. Trump has shown time and again that he can’t.
Here’s Obama:
What’s also interesting is that Obama continues to make the point that Trump isn’t a real republican. He’s putting an olive branch out to other Republicans, basically asking them to reject Trump because Trump is not one of them. But Obama is also making sure that he doesn’t make this a Democratic vs Republican issue. That might make Republicans feel like their back is up against the wall, and they might support Trump out of partisan spite. Rather, this is about Trump, and Trump only. And you can still be a good Republican, Obama is basically saying, and refuse to support Trump.
