Just when you thought things couldn’t get more bizarre. The Republican National Committee is reportedly looking into a scenario in which Donald Trump drops out of the presidential race.
This news comes on the heels of Donald Trump, his bff Sean Hannity, and Trump confidant Roger Stone all talking about how Trump may not win the election because Hillary will “steal” it.
Add to that today’s report that Trump’s staff is “suicidal,” and last night’s news that yet another (Republican) billionaire has come out for Hillary — in this case, former GOP gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman.
And finally, MSNBC reports this morning that Vin Weber, a former Gingrich congressional ally, who is close to Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, says Manafort will not go down with the sinking Trump ship. This suggests that Manafort is thinking of leaving, or at least has a contingency to leave if things keep getting worse.
Put it all together, and it would appear that the good ship TRUMP is taking on water, fast.
What does all of this mean? Well, it’s not good news for Trump. While I think reports of Trump’s political demise are premature, none of this is good for Trump. And that’s good — very good — for Hillary. If you’re a Republican donor looking at this mess, you might just question whether it’s a waste of mine to finance what appears to be a campaign in its death throes. And the reverse applies to Hillary Clinton’s campaign — potential donors to her campaign must be ecstatic at this point.
What’s going to happen next? I suspect Manafort will soon be out, or at least sidelined, and embattled former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski will leave CNN and come back to Trump-land, where he’ll clean up shop, and let Trump become even Trumpier. Remember, Manafort was brought in to try to rein in Trump’s craziness. It didn’t work. There’s no reason to believe that Lewandowski, who is rather hot-tempered himself, would do any better, or want to do any better — it’s thought that Corey is of the “let Trump be Trump” school.
The final shoe to drop, and it may already be dropping, is for Republican leaders to start realizing that not only is Trump going to lose, but that he’s bringing down the party, and its chances of holding on to the House and Senate. When that sinks in — when the campaign hits the point where it’s clear Trump will lose (and I don’t think that’s a certainty at all at this point) — things will then get very interesting, as Republicans may start falling all over themselves to flee Trump’s falling star.
Hillary hasn’t won this election yet. And she still could lose it. But, at this point in the race, I just can’t imagine this race going much better for Hillary, and worse for the GOP overall.
